Romani Weiss

Master of melodic Gypsy jazz

Hanna Bienert

Romani Weiss is one of the most outstanding guitarists of melodic Gypsy jazz. Growing up in Berlin’s Wedding district and accompanied by his cousin, the world-famous jazz violinist Martin Weiss, he developed early on that warm, lyrical tone that remains his trademark to this day. As early as the age of 14, he was traded as an insider tip in Berlin clubs – a musician who touches with the first note.

In 1979 Romani became a member of the legendary Häns’che Weiss Quintet and performed at the first music festival of the Sinti in Darmstadt. With this he wrote a piece of German jazz history early on. In the following decades, he has shared the stage with some of the most important personalities in jazz – including Stéphane Grappelli and Benny Goodman, whose appreciation underscores his status as an exceptional artist.

Romani convinces with unmistakable melodic lines, technical brilliance and an emotional depth that makes every performance a special experience. As an arranger, he has shaped numerous CD productions; his own compositions show an impressive stylistic range and artistic maturity.

His work has also been captured on film: He is present in several TV documentaries, including the award-winning ARD film “The Long Road of the Sinti and Roma” (German Human Rights Film Award 2021).

Romani Weiss stands for authentic Gypsy jazz at the highest level. As a bandleader, he unites selected musicians who share his clear musical vision. With them, he forms a warm, versatile and energetic sound – characterized by precision, authenticity and a noticeable joy of playing.
